The truth of brand vs generic drugs is that there is no difference between the two in terms of effects and chemical make up. A generic drug is exactly the same as its brand name counterpart for a few reasons:
- After 20 years a drug loses its patent allowing any company to produce the same drug as the inventor of the drug no longer has exclusive rights
- These drugs are scrutinized just as much when they are made as brand name drugs.
- Any change in the chemical make up of a drug classifies it as a new drug so generic medicines cannot be any different than their brand name product
- The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) is the controlling body that regulates these laws and makes sure all drugs that we buy are safe and work as described.
